Presentation Problems
Speakers who talk too fast may be difficult to follow. On the other hand, speakers who talk too slowly or too softly may lull you to sleep. Speakers may also have habits that are distracting. They may sway to and fro or fiddle with their hair while they are talking.
Occasionally, you may even encounter speakers whose dress or hairstyle is so unusual that you find yourself concentrating more on them than on what they are saying. We advise speakers on how to minimize such distractions.
As a listener, sometimes just being aware that you are responding to such cues may be enough to help you listen more attentively. If you find yourself drifting away because of such problems, remind yourself that what speakers say is the most important part of their message.
